Green-Light Your Dreams

Green-Light Your Dreams

by Sherri Rost on May 30, 2013

My grandmother once told me, "Don’t wait until you have enough money and time to travel because by the time you think you have enough of either, you may not be in any shape to go." Grandmother, who was in her 70s and suffering several health issues, didn’t want me to wait too late to follow my heart or dreams.

Since then, whenever I catch myself worrying about time or money, I remember what she said. The key phrase in her advice is "think you do."

Waiting for the circumstances to be perfect before we take action on anything  — whether it’s losing weight, exercising, finding a new job or taking a dream vacation — is like waiting for all the traffic lights to turn green before leaving home to drive to work. Won’t happen.

Follow your heart

That doesn’t, however, mean we can’t create circumstances — or set our metaphorical traffic lights on green — that make it possible to do what we want, follow our hearts. Planning is how we switch lights from red to green.

Cruises are a great example of how planning creates opportunities allowing you to get the most from your time and money. Booking a cruise, say, 12 months to 15 months in advance takes the stress out of both planning and paying.

When you book early, for instance, you get a lower rate than if you waited until a later date. Another benefit of early booking is being assured of great accommodations at the price you want to pay. And — wait for it — you can pay for your trip in increments, a huge benefit when mapping out your budget.

No worries, just happy

By the time you board your ship, you’ll have paid for accommodations, food and most of your activities. You can enjoy your vacation without worrying about a huge credit card bill in the future.

So set your lights on green for the vacation you’ve always wanted. Dream it. Together, we’ll make it happen.
